In order, with the dates. What happened, what was signed, what arrived in the mail and when. The sequence usually matters more than the conclusion.

You get a straight read
Whether this needs an attorney, what the work would involve, and roughly what shape it takes. Sometimes the answer is that you can handle it yourself.

You decide
If the firm is a fit, you get a written engagement and a fee agreed in advance. If it is not, you get a direction to go in.
What to have to hand
None of it is required. It just makes the first meeting worth considerably more than it otherwise would be.
Buying or selling property
The purchase agreement, the listing, and the inspection report if it exists. If nothing is signed yet, the address and the asking price are enough to start.
A business matter
Whatever exists already: filed articles, an operating agreement, the lease, the contract somebody sent you. For a new business, a description of what you intend to do and who is doing it with you.
An estate or a will
A list of what you own and how each piece is titled, plus any existing will, trust or power of attorney. After a death, bring the will if there is one and a death certificate.
A family matter or mediation
Anything already filed, any existing order or agreement, and a plain timeline of what has happened. The sequence matters more than the paperwork here.
